about the project for students
In K-12 and university classrooms throughout the pandemic, technology has allowed teachers and administrators to enter our homes and lives in an unprecedented fashion. In particular, this has included a use of proctoring software, which does the oversight work normally performed by teachers and teaching assistants in the classroom. Research shows these technologies unequally impact students of color, students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, transgender students, undocumented students, and disabled students. It also creates a classroom environment of distrust, thus harming students.

We have started this guide on methods of refusing carceral/surveillance logics in the classroom. This guide is not intended to be extensive, or even comprehensive, and we welcome contributions to it. Abolition requires collective buy-in and world-building. If you’re a student with an experience with proctoring software that you would like to share and add to our archive, or if you have suggestions to contribute to our curriculum guidelines, we invite you to share it with us!
